Bosworth's January/February Gardens 2023Bosworth's January/February Gardens 2023

As we head into 2023, it is time for the decorations to come down. We are, once again, partnering with Cransley Hospice Trust and their Christmas Tree Recycling Scheme. Register your tree on their website (www.cransleyhospice.org.uk) before 8th January and collection is between the 13th and 15th January. You are encouraged to make a donation which supports the fantastic work of the hospice. So what happens to the trees once collected? They are brought back to a central location and fed through a tree shredder. All of the chippings collected are then sent to Sywell Country Park and Boughton Estates. Remember too if donating and you are a UK tax payer to tick the gift aid box.

Moving to the garden and looking at how technology can help us. Whilst we are used to our homes becoming smart homes with the likes of smart thermostats, smart speakers and even fridges that know that you are running low on yoghurt, our gardens are now becoming smart too.

Robotic lawnmowers take the strain out of mowing the lawn throughout the cutting season. These time saving devices can give the lawn a cut while you are at work or out at the shops, leaving your weekends free to enjoy the garden. Did you know that you can even buy a robotic weeder now too?

Automatic irrigation systems have progressed over the years. You can set and forget these devices once installed, so that they once again take the laborious task of endlessly fi lling up a watering can and trotting back and forth to your pots and borders.

The latest models can sense if the soil is already wet from rain and prevent the system switching on, and saving money too!

Weather stations range from a simple sensor that measures temperatures to an elaborate system measuring a range of statistics including wind speed, direction, humidity, rain gauges and much more, and can often be paired with an app on your smartphone or a programme on the pc. Great for the weather buff and if you like to compare weather year on year!

Taking your favourite music in the garden has been possible for sometime but there are now dedicated sound systems designed specifi cally for the garden that will survive the wet and cold and be able to be left outside all year round. It is also reported that plants react well to music being played to them…

Extending the use of the garden into the evening requires lighting and gone are the days of having a glaring spotlight fl oodlighting the garden. There are now many types of ambient lighting available, lighting your seating area or focusing on illuminating that specimen plant. Of course, these can not only be put on timers but can also be linked to apps and your smart speakers to control with your voice.

These are just a few of the garden technologies that are available now but with more and more of our everyday tasks being replaced by smart technology who knows what will be available in the years to come?
