A new local scheme is set to bring the magic of the movies direct to rural communities across Northamptonshire. Commencing this autumn, the ‘Northants Village Cinema’ has been created by Simon Hopkins, who currently also runs the popular LUNA FLIX Outdoor Cinema in the county during the summer.

The project has received special grants from both FILMHUB MIdlands and the Northamptonshire Community Foundation. This fi nance subsidises the screening license of each fi lm. Films will be projected onto a portable 3m wide screen with high quality stereo sound. Subtitles can be added if requested.

Many local villages have already signed on, booking dates up to April next year, but Simon is looking to add extra venues to the rosta, probably to be included from January.

A village just needs its own promoter to book the dates into their hall (usually a monthly event), advertise the screening locally to their community and sell the tickets (usually on the door). A village promoter should be confi dent of fi nding at least 25 people to attend each show so you may be part of a local group already meeting up.

The fi lm must be currently available on DVD and you may choose your own title played, but it is recommended to use the list provided by the project. These will be selected as those expected to be the most popular. For example, the September to December list has Kenneth Branagh’s multi award-winning Belfast; the charming British comedy The Duke starring Helen Mirren & Jim Broadbent; the wartime drama Operation Mincemeat starring Colin Firth; and the 70’s-set golfi ng comedy The Phantom of the Open starring Mark Rylance. 2023 may bring the sequel to Fisherman’s Friends and Top Gun: Maverick depending on a poll put to all the venues.
