The George at Ashley, an 18th century Grade II listed public house complete with bed and breakfast rooms, has just been taken over and undergone extensive renovation by Steph and Neil Price. The couple moved with their family from Newton, near Geddington, to turn The George into a traditional country pub and a family business.
Although Neil is a qualifi ed chef and has worked within the catering industry in the past, he has for the past ten years been running his general building company. Steph has been working in an accounts offi ce for the past 18 years, but has a TEC Diploma in Hotel Catering and has worked in pubs and restaurants before. Both have hospitality backgrounds just never worked together until now.
With the physically demanding job taking its toll on Neil’s knees, and the couple always having had in mind to take on a pub at some point, the time seemed right when The George became available at the beginning of the year. Lockdown put an initial stop to the contract in March, but from July the purchase went ahead and Steph and Neil have been busy preparing for the August opening over the summer.
Their focus will be on good quality ‘pub grub’ with a frequently changing specials board. Everything will be freshly prepared on site, with locally sourced produce supporting local suppliers wherever possible, ideally within a 30-mile radius. As a freehold pub, The George will be able to put on guest ales from the many local breweries we are fortunate to have in the area.
The George has six letting rooms located at the back of the main building in a separate recently converted old Coach House: four double rooms, one twin and one family room, all en-suite, with breakfast included in the room rate.
