If you are looking for somewhere to explore this September and you enjoy delightful gardens and the history of a stunning country house, then Deene Park should most certainly be on your list of places to visit.

Deene Park has been the much-loved home of the Brudenell family since 1514 was the seat of the Earls of Cardigan, of whom the most notable was the 7th Earl who led the Charge of the Light Brigade at Balaklava in 1854. The House has grown organically over the centuries as successive generations have expanded the footprint to create the Tudor and Georgian mansion we see today. On public open days this warm and welcoming family home provides the visitor with an interesting yet complimentary mixture of styles, including a collection of family portraits, possessions, and memorabilia from the Crimean War and the preserved head and tail of the 7th Earls famous charger Ronald.

Immediately to the south of the house is a large parterre designed by David Hicks. Delightful topiary teapots, clipped lollipops of hawthorn and frames festooned with roses complete the scene.

Running west from the parterre, backed by the walls of the old Kitchen Garden are the Long Borders and White Garden. Here, formality gives way to a more relaxed feel, where shrubs, herbaceous perennials and bulbs tussle and mingle to form a kaleidoscope of colour throughout the season. Punctuating the Long Borders, with grand displays of seasonal bedding that form brilliant eye-catching features, are the Four Seasons and Stone Summerhouse Gardens. Beyond the formal gardens are the Pleasure Grounds which provide a lovely area to stroll in the cool shade.

The House & Gardens are open every Wednesday afternoon throughout September.
