IN MEMORIAM Robert CheneySome readers of Village Connect would have known Robert Cheney personally; others would have known him only through reading his interesting articles entitled ‘Antiques Appreciation’.

It is my sad duty to inform you that my dear friend and business partner, Robert, died on 13th July 2013. He is very much missed by myself and by many others.

Vivi and I thought it fitting to write a few lines about Robert and give readers an opportunity to learn a little more about him as a person.  Robert began his career in antiques in the early 1980s. His main interest at that time was collecting old tins. Such was his enthusiasm that he managed to assemble one of the finest collections in the country. He eventually sold this whole collection to an American lady. I believe the collection ended up in New York, where it graced a shop front window.

Following this, Robert developed an interest in postcards, particularly anything related to early theatre and film. His subject knowledge and his postcard collection became vast.  In 1990, Robert opened an antique shop at 11-13 High Street in Finedon. I came to know him at this time and we immediately struck up a friendship. After a few years, I joined him at this shop.

In 2008, Robert and I had the opportunity to purchase premises at 7-9 High Street, which became Affleck Bridge Antiques.  Here we worked together as a team and made the business grow. Robert was a kind, generous and loveable person. I am proud to have known him and very sorry to lose him.  I know he wanted the business to continue and so Affleck Bridge Antiques goes on with Robert’s spirit ever present.
