Appreciating Coffee Cups Coffee was hardly known in Europe before the 17th century. Travellers to the Middle East would have visited coffee houses, thus generating interest at home.
The first coffee house in Britain opened in Oxford in 1650, and coffee became very popular throughout Europe in the 18th century. At that time tea sets would often include 12 teacups and saucers and 12 coffee cups.
Over time, many coffee and tea sets have been broken up and thus full services are rare. As a result the demand for collecting coffee cups has increased. There are fine examples of coffee cups or ‘cans’ available. Some of these are small and were used for serving very strong Turkish style coffee.
Illustrated are: 1. A set of six continental coffee cans and saucers.
2. A set of four Royal Worcester coffee cans and saucers.
3. A Copeland Spode ‘Primrose’ coffee can and saucer.
4. A Royal Albert coffee can and saucer.
5. A Royal Crown Derby Imari pattern coffee can and saucer.
