‘Quality, Variety and Ambition’ The Stahl Theatre, West Street, Oundle Box Office: 01832 273930 www.stahltheatre.co.uk
Quality, variety and ambition is what Naomi Jones, Director of the Stahl Theatre, strives for when programming, and the 2016 season displays these qualities in abundance.
The History Boys Wednesday 13th & Thursday 14th January, 7.45pm Tickets: £6
Join St Anthony House as they expertly depict an unruly bunch of bright, funny Sixth Form boys in pursuit of sex, sport and a place at university! The English teacher is at odds with the young, shrewd supply teacher; the Headmaster is obsessed with results and the History teacher thinks he’s a fool. In Alan Bennett’s classic play, staff room rivalry and the anarchy of adolescence provoke insistent questions about History and how you teach it and perhaps more crucially about the value of education.
UN Inspector Wednesday 3rd through Friday 5th February, 7.45pm Tickets: £6
When an email arrives at the Presidential Palace describing the impending arrival of a UN Inspector wishing to see how IMF loans have been spent, a case of mistaken identity gets terribly out of hand.
Gogol’s dark comic masterpiece The Government Inspector has been beautifully updated by David Farr and transposed from a provincial backwater, to an emerging democracy from the old Soviet Union. The original, published in 1836, appears to have required depressingly little updating. Corruption, double-dealing and sheer stupidity seem to be universal.
Luke Wright and Paul Jellis present What I Learned From Johnny Bevan Written & performed by Luke Wright Monday 8th February, 7.45pm Tickets: £12 adults, £10 concessions WINNER Fringe First Award for new writing WINNER
The Stage Award for acting excellence A story of shattered friendship, class ceilings, and the hollow reality of the New Labour dream.
At university the whip-smart, mercurial Johnny Bevan saves Nick, smashing his comfortable, middle class bubble and firing him up about politics, music and literature. Twenty years later, as their youthful dreams disintegrate with the social justice they hoped for, can Nick save Johnny from himself?
Luke Wright delivers a multi awardwinning hurricane of a performance.
With humour and humanity he takes British politics head on, challenging the rise of New Labour, David Cameron and the abandonment of those left behind. “Pulsating, neatly handled piece of poetic storytelling” Lyn Gardner, Guardian “Blistering … a story of our times … a strikingly assured performance of a compelling piece of writing.” Scotsman “This is such a rich piece of writing... resonant and timely.” Exeunt
Co-commissioned by Norwich Arts Centre and Writers’ Centre Norwich Help us build ‘Stahl KENYA’!
In 2006, Harambee Schools Kenya founded Ngecho School in Gilgil to provide children with affordable secondary education. Over the past decade, Ngecho has grown rapidly to 350 students and is considered one of the best schools in the Naivasha District. Classrooms, science labs, and toilet blocks have all been constructed but one project remains incomplete: the construction of an assembly hall. Funds have now been secured to start work on a 25-meter hall where assemblies, exams and dining will take place and building is due to start before the end of this year.
Our target: We would like to raise a further £33,000 to build a stage at the far end of the hall complete with backstage facilities, comprising of two dressing rooms, two toilets and a storage space above. It will be a mini Stahl in Kenya! £10,000 has already been raised - now we are seeking your support to reach our target.
Why a theatre? Beyond the cultural and artistic benefits of such a project, sustainability remains a key dilemma in any charitable venture. Once operational, Ngecho School will be able to hire out the hall and stage for local and national events, thereby providing the school with an income stream.
What can I do? Online donation: If you would like to donate just select the ‘make a donation’ option when buying your tickets online. All proceeds will go to HSK (charity number 01078592).
Buy a block: For £50 you can buy a block of ‘Stahl Kenya’. A corresponding block will be inscribed with your name on a wall of the foyer Stahl Theatre, Oundle, for all to see. To buy a block go to www.campaign. justgiving.com/charity/hsk/stahlkenya
