While I was wandering around the plant area this morning, it was great to see all the new growth that is appearing on so many plants.  I really think that spring is my favourite season.  With the cold, drab and gloomy weather starting to fade, spring gives us hope and happiness for greater things to come.

Now is the time to think about certain pruning jobs around the garden.  Prune cotinus, cornus and willow to promote healthy, lush new growth.  Also prune roses, in early March, cutting back by a third, to an outward facing bud, with a sloping cut away from the bud.  This will open the bush up and allow air flow, which will help promote strong growth that is less prone to diseases.  Once pruned, these plants will benefit from a general-purpose feed.

Check over winter flowering plants and dead head where needed, remove the seed heads from faded bulbs, leaving the foliage to die back and feed the bulb for next year’s displays.  Herbaceous perennials are starting to shoot now, and if your clumps seem over crowded, then lift and divide them.  This allows you to fill gaps in your borders and also encourages new growth that will give you lots of summer colour.

Mowing can be started this month.  Make sure to clear the lawn of loose stones and plant debris.  Set your blades high for the first few cuts, lowering them as the season progresses.  At the end of March or early April, think about feeding your lawns; this will help thicken the grass, killing off unwanted moss and weeds to help create a healthier lawn.

For those of you who grow your own produce, now is the time to tidy and dig the veg beds over, ready for planting out crops such as onion and potatoes.  You can also plant crops such as lettuce, salad leaves and celery in the greenhouse or sow crops like parsnips and spinach outside, but make sure you cover with fleece if the weather turns frosty.  We have a great selection of seeds available in store and online.

Please don’t forget our feathered friends by regularly topping up the bird feeders, and filling bird baths.  We have a great range of food and feeders in store.

With the weather starting to warm up, weeds will start emerging around the borders.  Start hoeing around the borders to keep weeds under control.  Watch out for new shoots of herbaceous perennials as they start to emerge with the warmth of the spring.  Applying a general-purpose fertiliser around your borders will help feed and promote healthy growth.  Then apply a layer of mulch around, to help reduce new weed growth.

What ever you are doing this spring in your gardens, stay safe, and don’t forget that if you have any questions, you can contact any of our plant experts, who will gladly help and advise you.
