“There’s nothing quite like experiencing something in person, being drawn to it, feeling it and learning a little bit about how it was made,” enthuses Ali Meaker, artist and owner of The Artful Duck, which showcases the work of 64 different makers and artists, most of whom are based within 30 miles of the shop. Located on Brook Street in the heart of Raunds, The Artful Duck is a bright, welcoming place to visit, with a relaxed informal art gallery fl ow to the shop, encouraging customers to come in, browse and enjoy the beautiful objects around them and Ali is always on hand to give the fascinating back story of each piece. Originally built as a bank in 1906, the building isn’t the only one that has had a change in direction; Ali previously worked in cardiology for the NHS for 22 years. Both her father and grandfather had enjoyed painting and following her father’s death a few years ago Ali was faced with a collection of painting equipment: “I googled what all these pots and brushes were for and decided to give it a go. It turned out that I could actually paint!” A spell of creating artwork for friends and family was followed by exhibiting at craft fairs where Ali met a wonderful, super talented group of local artists and makers. Slowly the idea formed to create a warm, welcoming space where these beautiful, hand made items could be showcased in all their glory. Taking over the lease of the building on July 1st 2022, Ali and her family worked through the nights to completely overhaul the interior and opened the doors to The Artful Duck just three weeks later! Immediately offering the most amazing choice of items, the list of artists and makers continues to grow and evolve, with a huge range of tastes and budgets catered for, including a Vintage Room where items are lovingly displayed in the family’s grandmother’s cabinet. Bespoke framing is now also available by Ali’s husband Alan, who will happily discuss frames and mounts with each customer to ensure that the piece is displayed at its best.
