“An eclectic mix of things people have not seen before” is how Auburn Fox owners Vicky and Ian describe their family run furniture and accessories company. Entering their Thrapston shop, visitors are greeted by a stunning modern glass lamp, placed next to a British made leather and tweed sofa, accompanied by an octopus candle holder. The further you go, the more delights there are to discover. “We have everything you need for your home; from bookcases and sofas to tiny candles,” explains Vicky, “we’re defi nitely not a clone of another company; we always try to do something a bit different. We don’t want everyone to have the same home, everyone has unique tastes and we are here to help them explore their own style.” It’s proving a successful recipe for a business that has grown beyond all recognition from the days of restoring and upholstering furniture from their living room. Vicky continues: “Ian used to bring pieces of furniture home to paint or wax and I did the upholstering. But after burning our coffee table we decided we needed a workshop! We started selling things on Facebook that we’d restored and that led to bespoke orders so eventually we started attending trade shows to fi nd suppliers who were selling quirky, unusual things.” “Then we rented space in the Heart of the Shires and The Embankment and eventually that side of the business took over from us making things and we found this beautiful building here in Thrapston. And yes, the name of the company comes from my red hair!” One thing that visitors won’t get when they visit Auburn Fox is a hard sell, “I always hated being pounced on by sales staff,” explains Vicky “we help people when they need help but we encourage our customers to explore the different areas of the shop, sit on the furniture, take time to think about how things will work in their own home.” There is even a bistro within the Thrapston shop, cleverly named The Den, which serves a delicious seasonal menu and a lovely selection of home-made cakes. Based locally in Woodford, Vicky and Ian have a wish list of locations to branch out to and opened their second shop, in Stratford, this August. “We’re always thinking, how can we make it better, what’s the next step?” smiles Vicky.
