Sailing clubs across Northamptonshire are inviting all ages to #DiscoverSailing this summer!

With 2021 marked as the year of the staycation, combined with a boom in watersports as people look to the positive benefi ts of getting outdoors and closer to nature following the challenging months of the pandemic, there has never been a better time to get afl oat.

Local clubs are increasingly offering a diversity of ways to get on the water, with activities ranging from paddleboarding and open water swimming to windsurfi ng and sailing, and many venues offer a whole variety of courses to help new members get started or refresh their skills.

This summer, as part of the Royal Yachting Association’s #DiscoverSailing campaign, clubs across Northamptonshire are offering a warm welcome to anyone who would like to fi nd out more. Many clubs have taster sessions available, providing all the kit so you only need to bring along an old pair trainers you don’t mind getting wet, a towel and your sense of fun! Lots of clubs are also RYA Recognised Training Centres, offering courses for all ages and abilities.

Hollowell Sailing Club near Guilsborough has a Discover Sailing Open Day on Saturday 3rd July from 11am-4pm, for which no booking is necessary - just pop along to this family-friendly club to enjoy a free taster sail and tour the club’s expanded facilities.

The club also has Tuesday evening ‘Try Sailing’ sessions through June and July for £8/adult and £6/child. For all the details visit www.hollowellsc. org.uk. The club offers sailing and windsurfi ng plus courses, and new for 2021 has introduced Stand Up Paddleboarding, which as club spokesperson Jenny Sturt explains is proving popular: “It is a lovely way for families to explore the lake when the wind is not blowing, or enjoy those calm summer evenings.”

Middle Nene Sailing Club at Thrapston is also looking to provide taster sessions this summer, alongside a £50 discount on the club’s joining fee during July and August, and invites anyone who would like to fi nd out more to call in for a chat on Thursday evenings or Sunday afternoons, or get in touch via Facebook or by emailing This email address is being protected from spambots. As Wilf Kunze from the club explains: “We’re an inviting, open-minded club with good racing in dinghies and keelboats and all sailors are welcome, from juniors and beginners up to championship level. The club is an RYA training centre, has good facilities and even boasts its own campsite!”

Other clubs in the county offering a variety of ways to get on the water for all ages include: Northampton Sailing Club at Pitsford Reservoir, near Brixworth; Banbury Sailing Club at Boddington Reservoir near Byfi eld; and Cransley Sailing Club near Kettering.

As RYA Director of Sport Development Rob Clark sums up: “People are looking for ways to spend their leisure time on their doorstep or in the UK this summer and luckily we have a wealth of opportunities for people to fi nd a bit of escapism and benefi t from the positive mental health and wellbeing associated with being outdoors and on the water.”
