For many, the last year has been a real struggle on our mental health, more so over the winter months when we are less able to get out into our gardens. The coming months are a time of renewal in our gardens, with many jobs to do, giving us a boost from the dark months of winter. Nature does not disappoint either and if you planted your tulip bulbs in autumn last year you will be rewarded with a carpet of colour from these well-loved bulbs. The tulip itself was originally a wild fl ower in central Asia, and fi rst became cultivated by the Turks. In fact, it is now Turkey’s national fl ower. The word “tulip” in Turkish means “turban” which the fl owers are thought to look like. Mention tulips and many of us think of the Netherlands and the famous Keukenhof Gardens that attract thousands of visitors each year. Tulips were introduced into the Netherlands towards the end of the 16th century. They became hugely popular during the start of the 17th century and were even used a trading currency; at one time properties were sold for handfuls of tulip bulbs with tulips being 10x more than the average salary! The period in Holland was known as “Tulip Mania”. The Netherlands remains today, the world’s largest commercial exporter of tulip bulbs, exporting around 3 billion each year. Tulips make great cut fl owers, whether you cut your own or buy ready cut. The cut tulip will actually keep growing once in the vase, unlike other cut fl owers. To keep your tulips looking at their best, which can be up to seven days, they like to be kept cool, you can even add an ice cube to the water, and keep them away from sources of heat like fi replaces and radiators; they are fairly thirsty so keep an eye on the water too. Mother’s Day falls on Sunday March 14th this year and we have some beautiful giftware, planted arrangements and cards in store and available online.
