Welcome to Autumn!  By the time you read this, the county’s children will be back at school, no doubt clutching new schoolbags, pencil cases, PE kit, etc.

That’s about the only thing I looked forward to going back to school after the long summer holiday - other than seeing my friends of course - the purchase of new stationery, and perhaps a school bag, for the new academic year.

In fact, I was transported back to those days when my daughter and I went to the fabulous Coleman’s stationery shops in Kettering and Stamford - they also have branches in Oakham, Higham Ferrers, Oundle and Northampton, to name but a few places. See pages 22-23.

What delightful shops, with helpful staff and reasonable prices - highly recommended, and we were given our purchases in a brown paper bag too.  Let’s all support good shops like these in our town centres instead of the faceless, online behemoths.

Looking forward to events happening soon in Northamptonshire, I see that the Sywell Classic Pistons and Props, featuring a wealth of automotive and aeronautical engineering, is on the weekend of 21st and 22nd September.  Or for American car collectors and fans, the AACI Open Nationals are held at Billing Aquadrome in Northampton from 6th to 8th September.

Popping just across the border to Lincolnshire, enthusiasts of all things equestrian will no doubt be heading to the Burghley Horse Trials, taking place from 5th to 8th September.

For more events in and around the county - other than Vivi’s fantastic What’s On Guide in this very publication, of course - take a look at ‘Northamptonshire Britain’s Best Surprise’, a relatively new website designed to highlight what we already knew, that Northamptonshire is a fabulous county, full of lots of interesting places (and people).  Visit
