Josh Allen, Oliver Frisby and James Keane, who left Oundle School in 2017, will be competing in the Mongol Rally this summer under the team name Livin’ on a Spare in aid of the charities Cool Earth and Sue Ryder. The Mongol Rally is an epic journey travelling over 10,000 miles across mountains, deserts and the steppe of Europe every summer.  There is no fixed route and no real rules – all they ask is that the vehicle has an engine no bigger than 1.2 and that you raise £1000 for charity.

The trio decided they wanted to do something epic in their gap year before they go to University in September and this seemed like the perfect adventure.   The added bonus is of course that they are raising money for charity.  Half of the money raised will go to Cool Earth, which is working against the destruction of the rain forest.  The rest of it will go to Sue Ryder which is a charity particularly close to one of the trio’s hearts after his grandfather died in one of their hospices last year.

A car has already been purchased for the journey: a 17-year-old Renault Clio with 125,000 miles on the clock!  The rally starts in Prague and the finish line is in Ulan Ude in Russia.  The friends have chosen to do the slightly more scary Southern Route, encompassing countries such as Turkey, Iran, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Mongolia and, of course, Russia.  They are hoping to finish the journey in about six weeks, just in time for them to get to Fresher’s Week at University!

Josh, Oliver and James are looking for as much support as possible to help them get across the finish line either through sponsorship of the vehicle or through donations of equipment they will need such as jerry cans, a tool kit, medical supplies and much more!
