Dear Reader
We have all, no doubt, enjoyed the wonderful weather over summer, but it is frightening to see how the heat can suddenly deplete our rivers and waters and scorch countryside and gardens. Jonathan Plowe of Boughton Estates Woodlands explains on page 32 how some of the new trees planted have had their leaves literally burnt off. Jonathan Biggs of Bosworth’s Garden Centre gives tips on pages 52-53 on how to retain water and adopt an eco-friendly approach to gardening.
We have yet to see the heat’s impact on the usually wonderful autumnal display of colours as we approach the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness but, in the meantime, there is still plenty of events to be enjoyed outdoors. The Nene Valley Festival (pages 22-23) celebrates the wildlife, heritage and culture of the Nene Valley, and Brigstock Beer Festival (pages 44-45) provides food and drink, music and entertainment in the meadows outside Brigstock Village Hall. Lyveden is the backdrop for gunpowder, treason & plot (page 34), and Kelmarsh Hall & Gardens (page 40) showcases more than 100 varieties of dahlia - a galore not to be missed.
Northants Open Studios (pages 18-19) present over 160 artists in 82 venues during its festival of art. Oundle Festival of Literature (pages 56-57) picks up for the season with authors presenting books on tech and wood age. Two new books by local authors are also featured in the pages ahead: The History of Golf in Northamptonshire (page 60) and Captured in Singapore (page 64). Peterborough Cathedral is the setting for a visit by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (pages 46-47), and if you fancy having a go at singing, go to page 54 to learn how to join the Sing for Life in aid of Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice.
Enjoy the glory that autumn will bring.
