Dear Reader

As is the custom when a year comes to an end, most of us will reflect on the months gone by and reminisce on time shared with loved ones.  Life is cyclical; some will sadly have suffered bereavement or deep personal loss in 2017 whilst others, like our own family, will have been blessed with a new member in our ‘tribe’.  The more you love, the more you have to lose - and the more precious are those special moments that become treasured memories along the line; we must make as many as we can with those dear to us - that remains my ongoing resolution.

When taking stock, many of us will also set goals for the year ahead, such as getting healthier and fitter, taking up a new hobby or giving something back to the community.  You will find plenty of ideas on how to get your fitness levels up on the pages ahead, from Nordic walking and personal fitness instruction, to Pilates and dancing.  Younger readers should be motivated by Jessica Anderson of Hannington and her recent skiing successes, see pages 14-15, and by Mawsley’s Lily Shaw and her tap dancing world championship on page 38.  Our country parks are looking for volunteers, see pages 44-45, as is Home-Start on page 58 and the Alzheimer’s Society, see page 68; you could make a valuable contribution.

Some will dream about starting their own business venture, just like Eleanor & Martin Allen have done with Sage & Brooke, pages 8-9, or Katrina Read with KRevive on page 20.  We are also lucky to have a myriad of local food and drink producers on our doorstep to inspire budding entrepreneurs as, for instance, those detailed in the Carlsberg UK Northamptonshire Food & Drink Awards 2017/18 on pages 40-41.

Several country houses and parks will have snowdrop displays for us to enjoy in the hardness of winter, and the villagers of Harrington get together to arrange a February snowdrop walk, see page 54.  These first messengers of new life remind us that the days are slowly getting longer and brighter times are ahead.  With Valentine’s, love and weddings will be on the agenda, and you can enjoy Love Lyveden Weekend, see page 62, or plan your wedding at Cranford Hall, see page 13, or Kelmarsh Hall, see page 60.

On a personal note, July will see dual celebrations: 25 years since we first moved to Geddington plus our pearl wedding anniversary.  Before that, in April, Village Connect will become a teenager - how time flies when you’re having fun…

With my very best wishes for 2018 -
may it bring love and light, health and happiness!
