Dear Reader

2016 was certainly turbulent and will undoubtedly be reflected upon as one of political upheaval where the previously deemed inconceivable became reality.  It was one of loss in many senses but particularly of pioneering activists and era-defining artists, national and international treasures. As we stand together at this juncture, let us find comfort in quotes from two of those who sadly left us in 2016: “That we are far more united and have far more in common than that which divides us” and “There’s a crack, a crack in everything - that’s how the light gets in”.

And now it is getting lighter.  We have passed the winter solstice, the days are getting longer and we are heading towards spring.  Start the New Year as you mean to go on with a walk at Lyveden, see page 56, or enjoy a snowdrop walk, such as the one in Harrington, see pages 78-79.  Boughton House, which adorns the front cover, is continuing its restoration projects to the parkland of its 17th century formal landscape with the Broad Walk Lime Tree Avenue, see page 50, so plenty to look forward to as the year progresses.

This issue also celebrates the achievements of some of our local, independent businesses, such as those at Oundle Wharf, see pages 8-11; edible16, see page 16; and the winners and runners-up of The Carlsberg UK Northamptonshire Food & Drink Awards, see pages 42-43.  We are lucky to have these wonderful companies right on our doorstep, and it is vital that we use them to keep our community going strong in the months ahead.

New Year is a time for reflection and resolutions, and you will find plenty of inspiration on the pages ahead; whether you are thinking of starting a new building project, see pages 26-27; becoming an author, see page 76; or joining a fitness club such as Jolly Good Company, see page 86.  You can do your bit for our community by volunteering as a reading helper for Beanstalk, see page 94, or by supporting the invaluable Home-Start, see page 46.  If you get itchy feet, go to page 70 for the Adventure Travel Show, or to page 90 for the London Cruise Show.  Maybe you would like to learn a new craft?  Look to those on offer by The Orton Trust, see page 66.  The choice is endless…

Whatever you decide to do, may your 2017 be filled with openness,
truth, love and light - Happy New Year!
