The increasing use of computers and the use of lasers has resulted in the art of free hand stonemasonry become a dying skill, particularly in the commercial world. However, just as one might attend woodwork, art, pottery or embroidery classes there is an opportunity to attend stonemasonry classes with the Orton Trust.
The Orton Trust, a charitable trust, was founded in 1968 with the aim of encouraging the traditional stonemasonry skills used in the restoration and conservation of historic buildings. Its activities are based at the redundant church at Orton, formerly a chapelry of Rothwell. The Trust made a further contribution to the re-use of redundant churches, when in 1977 it acquired St Peter’s, Little Oakley, near Corby.
The Trust can boast students from all parts of the country including York Minster, Burghley House, Hadrian’s Wall and Dover Castle. However, the demand from the trade has decreased and there are now vacancies on the courses giving rise to opportunities, for those who wish to just have a go. There is no need to have any kind of past experience, just plenty of enthusiasm.
Courses include basic masonry skills, mixing mortars, lettering, care of tools, restoration carving and masonry conservation. Since stonemasonry does not lend itself to the evening class situation, the courses are run at weekends. The current cost is £170, which does include some meals.
Upcoming dates: Friday 17th through Sunday 19th February Basic Masonry Skills Friday 24th through Sunday 26th February Relief Carving in Slate Friday 17th through Sunday 19th March Intermediate Masonry Skills Saturday 25th & Sunday 26th March Tool Sharpening
The Orton Trust is fully reliant on donations to carry on the maintenance of two churches and a lecture room, as well as running courses. The Lecture Hall at Orton is available to hire to small groups, please contact the Course Manager 01536 711600 for full details.
