New Local Drink of the Year Award
After much anticipation and a great deal of excitement, the 21 winners in the Carlsberg UK Northamptonshire Food and Drink Awards 2015/16 were being honoured at a glittering Awards Dinner in October at The Derngate Theatre in Northampton. The competition, running for its seventh year, was originally devised by Northamptonshire Enterprise Partnership (NEP) and aimed at celebrating all that is great about local produce and drink, recognising excellence within the county’s dining venues and rewarding those who work so hard within the culinary sector.
Saxby’s Cider’s Plum Cider won ‘New Local Drink of the Year’. Husband and wife team, Philip & Amanda Saxby, were delighted with the result, having previously had their Medium Sparkling Cider as a finalist in the same category for 2014/15.
Saxby’s Cider is made in the Crafty Pig Cider House in the small village of Farndish, near Wellingborough. Amanda & Philip’s Northamptonshire apple delights stem from their own orchard, inaugurated in 2012, along with another orchard in Northamptonshire for the dessert fruit and ancient cider variety apples from Herefordshire.
Saxby’s press all their apples on the farm and the cider is allowed to ferment slowly over the winter to produce the fullest flavour. It is clean, crisp and very refreshing with a distinct appley aroma and taste. The couple has diversified into production of flavoured ciders, using fruit juice, such as the award-winning Plum Cider and Blackcurrant Cider as well as a limited edition Mulled Cider for the winter. This year’s production plans include adding a Rhubarb Cider to the popular range.
Unfortunately, due to the award success, the Plum Cider has already sold out, but most of the Saxby’s range is stocked by the following local businesses: Beckworth Emporium in Mears Ashby; Amps in Oundle; Sage & Brooke in Grafton Underwood; Samuel Pepys in Slipton; The Kettering Park Hotel; The Bottle Mix in The Yards, Kettering; Titchmarsh Village Shop; The Griffin in Higham Ferrers; The Axe & Compass in Ringstead and The Old School in Stanwick.
You will also find Saxby’s Cider at Thrapston Farmers’ Market every first Saturday of the month (please note no market in January).
