Cransley Hospice Fundraiser Appointed MBE
“There are so many people who are worthy to be recognised in the NHS and I am very grateful that I have been given this honour. I started in nursing in 1977 after deciding as an 18-year-old that I wanted to work with people. This is in spite of the fact that I didn’t take biology at school as I was squeamish. I will always be a nurse and I will always stick my neck out for patients as that is part of who I am. This is as true in both my nursing and fundraising roles.” In her role as Fundraising Manager Diana has overseen the opening of the Cransley Hospice Shop and Coffee Shop and the establishment of yearly fundraisers including the Cransley Hospice Road Race, Summer Ball and Tree of Lights at Christmas. However, her favourite event is one of the newest Strictly Got To Dance! Diana, said: “My rule with fundraising is it has to be win-win. Not just a win for the hospice but something in it for everyone and Strictly Got To Dance certainly had that. We had nine teams representing various organisations that had a fantastic time dancing. I’m pleased to say one of the Consultants that took part is still dancing!” Diana acknowledged that she is only in this position due to the fantastic team that she has around her and saved special praise for Cransley Hospice Patron Dr John Smith. “If anyone deserves recognition it is John Smith who has worked tirelessly in developing the hospice and I would like to thank him and former end-of-life lead Angela Howe for nominating me. Diana Patrick, fundraising manager at Cransley Hospice in Kettering has been appointed an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for services to healthcare. Diana fi rst became Fundraising Manager in 1999 to help cover a shortfall in funding. Since then, she has increased the amount raised to over £850,000 a year. Diana originally trained as a nurse qualifying in 1977. She still maintains her nursing skills and works one day a week in the endoscopy unit at Kettering General Hospital. Diana admitted to being shocked when she fi rst received the news, saying: “At fi rst I thought it was a joke and then it was a sense of sheer excitement when it set in. It was not until the Cabinet Offi ce rang to confi rm I would be happy to speak to the media and they were able to confi rm it was not a hoax did it really sink in.”
