Back to Life Canine Physical Therapy, run by Alice Tanner, is based in Walgrave and covers Northamptonshire and the surrounding counties. Alice is qualifi ed in both Therapeutic Canine Massage and McTimoney-Corley Spinal Therapy and specialises in helping dogs with mobility and lameness issues. Alice is a member of the Canine Massage Guild and is fully insured for professional indemnity and public liability.

Therapeutic Canine Massage aims to both rehabilitate soft tissue injuries and support orthopaedic conditions, such as arthritis and hip dysplasia. McTimoney- Corley Spinal Therapy, on the other hand, is a gentle but effective whole body manipulative treatment, which works to align and balance the dog’s musculoskeletal and nervous systems, to restore and maintain health, soundness and performance. Canine physical therapy is suitable for dogs of all breeds, ages and disciplines and is a results-driven treatment which aims to see a positive change in just one to three sessions.

Alice uses a blend of these two therapies to help resolve many sub-clinical, day-today mobility issues you may see with your dog, whether they have suddenly come on or have been there for a while. Signs that your dog may benefi t from a treatment include:

• Lameness/limping
• Stiffness due to orthopaedic conditions, such as arthritis, or for another reason
• Diffi culty going up/down stairs or in/out of the car
• Performance issues such as agility: knocking poles, measuring or weave problems, or obedience: send away
• Disinterested in life or change in behaviour such as aggression, reluctance to play etc.
• Twitching down back especially when being stroked or groomed
• Appearing ‘old before their time’
• Gait/posture irregularities such as crabbing or throwing out a leg, roaching/swayback
• Nervous/anxious/touch shy

Following treatment, some of the benefi ts seen include better movement with a more fl uid, effortless gait; reduced stiffness; signifi cantly reduced pain levels or reduction of lameness; happy to go on and enjoying walks again; able to go up/down stairs or get in/out of the car; ‘zest’ back for life; improved performance in competitive and working dogs and better posture.

Canine physical therapy isn’t just for dogs with mobility issues. Alice sees many fi t and healthy dogs that regularly compete in agility and other canine sports, as their owners understand the need to keep their dogs in top condition for their chosen discipline. Alice attends many shows throughout the year, offering free muscular health checks for the dogs and promoting canine physical therapy and its benefi ts.

Some of the events Alice will be attending over the summer include the Wellingborough Dog Training Club Agility Show on 6th-7th July at Wellingborough Rugby Club and The Kennel Club International Agility Festival at Rockingham Castle on 10th-11th August.
