Sunday 4th November - Salmon Fishing in the Yemen (12A) The filmed is based on a book by Paul Thoday. Ewan Mcgregor stars as a Government fisheries scientist, who receives a request for technical consultancy from a Sheikh keen to introduce salmon fishing into the wadis of his native Yemen. His reaction is understandably scathing. Only orders from his Machiavellian masters - relayed through a female version of Alistair Campbell played by Kristin Scott Thomas doing humour brilliantly - compel him to oblige. From the splendours of salmonful Scotland to the deserts of salmonless Yemen, the light-hearted plot carries us along, with love interest supplied courtesy of Emily Blunt, playing the representative of the Sheikh’s agents in London.

Friday 16th November The Angels’ Share (15) subtitles A laugh-out-loud comedy with gritty roots and very strong language directed by Ken Loach. Robbie is a young Glasgow criminal, about to become a father and therefore desperate to escape his criminal background. He finds himself sentenced to repaint a community centre with a bunch of lawbreaking dopes and dorks - Mo, Rhino and Albert. The supervisor, Harry, is a kindly soul who has a connoisseur’s passion for whisky and out of the goodness of his heart takes them on an outing to a distillery. Miraculously, Robbie turns out to have a ‘nose’ - an untrained discerning judgment of whisky. He is intrigued by the fact that some whisky evaporates in the cask - the so-called “angels’ share” - and the unreconstructed criminal in him wonders how he can get his share. Robbie and his mates are no angels, but the film finds a way of  giving them something that real life can’t or won’t - a chance!

Friday 7th December Once Upon a Time in Anatolia (15) subtitles Twelve men, including a policeman, a doctor and a murder suspect, drive through the dusk in search of a dead body buried deep in the Anatolian steppes. Unfolding over a night and a day, the events of the investigation are infused with insights into the banality of everyday life and meditations
on human existence. Part crime drama, part road trip, part study of human nature, the film’s impressive cinematography effectively captures the vast rural and urban landscapes of Turkey and the story-ridden faces of the motley cast of characters.

Friday 14th December The Five year Engagement (15) This film bills itself as a rom-com in reverse, beginning with Jason Segel’s Tom and Emily Blunt’s Violet falling for each other at a New Year’s Eve party. The freshly engaged couple move from San Francisco to darkest Michigan when she wins a temporary post at the university. Tom gives up his job in the kitchen of a fashionable restaurant, but as Violet’s contract is extended resentment starts to fester, and the couple’s wedding date telescopes everfurther into the distance.
