2017 is the centenary of Geddington’s
heaviest losses in the First World
War. To mark this poignant year,
Boughton House and Geddington
C of E Primary School have come
together to create a project called
Echoes and Footsteps: researching
and sharing how Geddington was
affected by WWI.

The project has been awarded a
Heritage Lottery Grant and is being
led by Anne-Marie Sandos, who has
been working with Geddington’s after
school facility: Geddington University.
Over the last six weeks of the summer
term, pupils became World War I
Investigators. Their mission was
to use information about 50 local
soldiers gathered by local historians
to build up a detailed picture of up
to ten soldiers discovering: who they
were, what they did before, what
happened to them during the war.

They have also looked at how life in
the village changed during the war.
A number of villagers and local
historians visited the school to share
the information they have. John
Bennett brought his gramophone
and records with songs from the era
for the children to listen to; many of
them had never seen a gramophone
before. The children particularly
enjoyed seeing the rifle that Steve
Brown brought in along with medals.

After the summer holidays, the whole
school will continue the work of their
World War I investigators, which will
cumulate, in mid-November, with a
presentation, memorial service, tours
of the village and website sharing of
all the information gathered.
