“The Ramblers is a charity whose goal is to protect the ability of people to enjoy the sense of freedom and benefits that come from being outdoors on foot.”
Benedict Southworth, Ramblers CEO
Over the last sixty years, the Ramblers have played a pivotal role in helping secure the footpath network in England and Wales. The Wellingborough and District Ramblers will be celebrating its 25th year in 2016. Since its formation in March 1991, it has consisted of a committed core of walkers that meet regularly to enjoy time in the great outdoors, and to support the Ramblers’ objectives.
Quite a few of the founder members still walk with the group, which enjoys a varied and comprehensive programme of walks run by volunteer leaders. The walks range from 4-16 miles in length on five days out of seven every week. For example, the Sunday schedule can either offer a short morning walk of around 4 miles or a full day’s walking of up to 16 miles in length. The ever-popular Wednesday morning walk is a faster-paced walk of around 7-8 miles ending with a convivial pub lunch. Thursdays are reserved for longer day walks, usually walked further from home and directly from the map, known as ‘Pioneer’ walks.
The Ramblers recommend that those wishing to begin walking should be realistic about their ability and start with a short walk, working their way up to the longer walks. A full listing of Wellingborough and District Ramblers’ current walks programme is shown at the website address below. You will be most welcome to come along and meet this friendly and sociable group; join them for a couple of walks to see how group walking suits you, then you will hopefully be sufficiently inspired to join as a full member, which offers various retail discounts and all the benefits that full membership brings.
