How was your Christmas? Quiet? For local charity Home-Start Wellingborough & District, Christmas was far from quiet …
Preparations started in early December with visitors to the town’s shopping centre, placing toys and gifts under the ‘Giving Tree’ ready for Santa to give to children supported by the charity. Toiletries and selection boxes were collected from local churches and other supporters, while the names of families in real need were passed on to the local Lions Club for seasonal hampers.
The highlight for many was the Christmas Dinner and Party, which was our biggest ever. Almost 100 parents and children enjoyed a full Christmas dinner – with the turkey donated by a local village butcher. Dinner was followed by crafts, face painting and games and, of course, a visit from Santa.
Home-Start – not just for Christmas! Home-Start Wellingborough & District is not just for Christmas and, throughout the year, our volunteers give two-three hours a week to offer invaluable support to families – this includes volunteers who live in many of our surrounding villages. Volunteers help parents with their own individual difficulties, offering a helping hand, a listening ear or even a shoulder to cry on. The families live in every corner of the Borough of Wellingborough – if there is a need, we try to help.
I hope this brief article goes a little way towards showing you the difference our charity makes all year round.
We will soon be holding our next training course for volunteers, so why not make joining our team your New Year’s Resolution?
