Sunday 7th February Mr Holmes (PG) Set in 1947, a long-retired Sherlock Holmes, played by Ian McKellen, is living in a Sussex village with his housekeeper and her young son, a boy who idolises him and wants him to work again. Holmes is wrestling with his own early dementia as he tries to remember and solve his final case, now 30 years old, and is haunted by the memory of a woman at the heart of that case.
Thursday 18th February 45 Years (15) In the week leading up to their 45th wedding anniversary celebration, the ‘happy couple’ receive an unexpected letter which reveals an emotional secret from the husband’s past. Superbly nuanced performances from Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtenay turn what appears to be an everyday story of a seemingly rock-solid marriage into one full of suspicion and distrust. Set in the beautiful but bleak Norfolk landscape, this is an intelligent and moving British film.
