WICKSTEED AT WAR BRINGS WARTIME BRITAIN TO LIFE
The sights and sounds of the Second World War will be brought to life at Wicksteed Park this summer as the popular attraction delivers an action-packed programme of history and nostalgia.
Wicksteed at War, to be held at the Kettering Park on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th June, is a free family event sponsored by the Military Vehicle Trust combining military vehicle displays and re-enactor groups.
The event brings history to life with hundreds of military vehicles on display, a full arena of entertainment, fly-bys, battles, stall holders and much much more.
One of this year’s highlights, on the 80th anniversary of the first flight of a spitfire, will be a spitfire on the ground at Wicksteed Park. There will also be a 1940s party in the Wicksteed Park Pavilion on Saturday 11th June, with live music, singing and dancing until the early hours featuring the Bombshell Belles, the Kalamazoo Dance Band and 1940’s DJ Major Swing & Kitty.
Children will experience life as a wartime evacuee as part of the family military history show.
Youngsters will learn all about the boys and girls who were taken away from their families to protect them for German bombing raids during World War Two.
An evacuee train will be running on the park’s railway to recreate what it was like to be taken to stay with a new family, with actors in period costume helping to re-create history by playing the role of those who looked after the children who arrived in Kettering from London.
Youngsters will also be given an evacuee train ticket and a small string-tied box to show how few possessions children were allowed to take with them.
The evacuee train is part of a Wicksteed At War education day on Friday 10th June, designed for children aged 7-13 (Key Stages 2-3).
